True love loves truth

Can we stop pitting love and truth against each other? I’d much prefer a radical commitment to both.

Hi Pete,

So yesterday I’m watching the Duke v Kansas game of the NCAA tournament. My twin sons David and Jonathan have divided their loyalties, Jono pulling for Kansas and David for Duke. At one point late in the game a ball went out of bounds and who would receive possession was of vital importance. After watching 10 replays, David was positive it went of Kansas and Jonathan was sure it was off Duke.

I hope the point is pretty transparent. Truth can be very had to come by! The post-modern drama indeed.

  Obviously, David was wrong, since it’s wrong to support Duke.
  
  Sure, figuring out truth in that instance was tricky and their loves clouded the issue. But for the rest of the game, there may have been a few other close calls, but for the most part, truth was self-evident. A basket was a basket and a foul was a foul.

I’m not sure I agree that truth is that easy to come by when people have different predisposition (Try talking politics with someone today), but I certainly do love you!

  A predisposition is just that, not love. It’s not truth, either. Back to the story of your kids. Predisposition: My team gets the ball. Truth: The team that touched the ball last before going out doesn’t get the ball. Love: Basketball is best for both teams when the rules are well-defined and well-officiated, enabling both teams to play to their full potential within those rules. (And I love you, too!)

True love loves truth
