Psalm 82

(An Asaph psalm.)

All rise!
God takes his seat as Judge in the courtroom.
He renders his verdict
On all those who hold God-like power over people.

He says,
“I’m sick of your perverted justice!
You ensure injustice continues.
You let the guilty rich get off scott free.
You should be defending the vulnerable
And kids raised without their dads.
You should be running to the side of the poor,
Using your resources for the oppressed.
You should use your strength for the weak.
You realize that you need the needy, don’t you?
Saving people from the unscrupulous
Is your real mission in life.

“You may be God-like with power,
But you know nothing of God.
How can you be so stupid?
Justice isn’t blind,
You’re blind to justice.
Because of it, the land is shaken to the core
As injustice roams freely.

“I’ve said, ‘You are God-like.
With all your power and responsibility,
You represent me to the world.’
But you’re nothing like God,
Proved by your mortality.
It’s a good thing you’re not immortal,
Since you’ll be replaced like every other ruler.”

Step up, God, and take your rightful place
As earth’s Judge.
All nations are yours
And need your justice.
