Psalm 75

(Worship leader: An Asaph psalm to be sung to the tune “Don’t Kill Me.”)

Thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you!
God, we’re overwhelmed with gratitude
For everything you’ve done for us,
For putting your reputation on the line for us.

You said to us in our anxiety,
”I’ve got my own calendar I’m working from.
I will judge justly,
But it’s in my time and on my terms,
Not yours.
I know it feels like the earth is falling to pieces,
But I’ve got things under control.
I’m the foundation.”

You say to the self-important,
”Stop your me-first approach to everything
Or I’ll stop it for you.”
To the power hungry, you say,
“Quit flaunting and flexing.
It’s bad enough when you do it
In front of the mirror,
Don’t do it in front of God.
Keep your insolent mouths shut.”

There’s no one on the face of the earth
Who can stand up and look God in the eye.
God is the only true Judge,
He determines who prevails
And who loses each case.
See what’s in Yahweh’s hand?
It’s the Cup of Judgment,
Filled with a mulled wine thickly spiced.
The guilty will drink this heady brew
Down to the last drop.

Meanwhile, I’ll go on and on
Like a song set on repeat,
Singing the praises of Jacob’s God.
He’s the one who declared,
“Those me-first people —
I’ll cut them down to size.
But those who use their power for others
Will stand tall
At the end of the day.”
