Psalm 61

(Worship leader: A David psalm to be sung with just voice and cello.)

Here I am, again, God,
Crying out to you.
Please pay attention to my prayer.

I couldn’t be further from you.
At least, if feels that way,
Shouting my prayers from the far side
Of the globe.
My heart can’t take this much longer,
But I still keep at it.
I hold nothing back,
Climbing up your towering mountain peaks.
For you have been my rock-solid hideaway,
My impregnable fort against foes.

The trajectory of my life
Is toward you,
Longing to live in your house forever,
To huddle within your eagle-wing embrace.
You’ve heard my self-offering vows to you, God.
I come from a long line
Of people who have lived their lives
For you,
Toward you,
With you.

Keep the king alive,
Extending the reach of his reign for generations.
May he always rule for God’s sake,
Not his own,
A mutual honoring
As you wrap him in love and never-quitting protection.

Convinced,
I prepare myself for praise,
Compiling a long list of the songs I’ll sing to you.
I can’t wait to make good
On the self-offering vows I pledged.
