Psalm 59

(Worship leader: Sing this David poem about when Saul sent assassins to kill David in his house to the tune “Don’t kill me.”)

Send in the cavalry, God.
Be my hideout
From these haters out to get me.
Save me from these assassins
Bent on spilling my blood.

They have me under surveillance.
Yahweh, these thugs conspire against me
For no reason whatsoever.
I didn’t do anything to deserve this,
But there they are,
Guns drawn.
Look how bad this is
And get me out of here!

You are Yahweh.
You are the God of heaven’s armies.
So, get up and get going!
Thrash these mercenaries.
Take down these traitors.

(Stop. Breathe deeply. OK.)

They snarl like wild dogs at night,
Terrorizing the city.
Their words are vomit,
Trash talk,
Switchblade speech.
They think,
“We can say whatever we want
And no one will hold us to account.”
But you laugh, Yahweh.
These mercenaries are painful humor.

I am focused,
Attentive,
Ever on the lookout for you.
For you are my strength.
You are my safehouse, God.
You are my God,
The only reliable one in my life.

God will be my vanguard,
Leading the attack,
Enabling me to gloat over those
Who gloated over me.
But don’t kill them, Lord King.
Let them be a living reminder.
Pull them up by their roots.
Leave them as wrecking ball rubble.
For their word crimes,
For their speech sins,
Let their arrogant tongues be their trap.
For their curses,
For their lies,
String them up in a noose of their own words.
The whole world will see it and know
There’s a God taking care of Jacob’s people.

They snarl like wild dogs at night,
Terrorizing the city.
They rummage the trash for food,
Howling their hunger.
But I’m singing of your strength.
As their night is replaced by your dawn,
I’m awake and singing of your love.
You’re my safehouse,
You’re my hideout when things get bad.

I am worshipful,
Attentive,
Ever singing for you.
For you are my strength.
You are my safehouse, God.
You are my God,
The only reliable one in my life.
