Psalm 57

(Worship leader: David wrote this poem when he was hiding from Saul in a cave. Sing it to the tune “Don’t Kill Me.”)

Mercy!
Let your womb-love come to my aid.
I need protection
And I’ll find it with you,
Like a scared child
In his mama’s arms,
Until this soul storm passes.

I shout my complaint
To God-without-equal,
To God who clears my name.
He crosses the sky to save me,
Smacks down
Those tracking me down,
Showers me with love,
Reminds me of his unending,
Unbreaking commitment.

I’m surrounded by snarling beasts,
My neighbors gnashing terrible teeth,
These people ready to tear me apart
With warrior words.
Their mouths are as deadly as their weapons.
Both kill.

You are deeper and farther and higher
Than sky and space, O God.
Each inch of earth
Is blanketed by your glory.

I was hunted like an animal,
Exhausted and weary
In my worry.
But the traps they set for me
Snapped shut on them instead.

I have a one-track heart, O God.
My heart is a one-way street
Heading in your direction.
I’m composing songs
I can’t wait to play and sing.
Get out of bed, soul!
Get out of bed, guitar and piano!
The sun isn’t up yet
But I can’t wait to get the party started!

Even among filthy Philistines
This urge to praise you takes over.
Yes, I will sing my lungs out
Even among people who don’t give you the time of day.
You aren’t limited to this place on earth.
Your vast love goes beyond galaxies.
Your never-stopping love
Paints the sky true blue.

You are deeper and farther and higher
Than sky and space, O God.
Each inch of earth
Is blanketed by your glory.
