Psalm 52

(Worship leader: A David poem about the time when that Edomite Doeg reported back to Saul, saying, “I found David at Abimelech’s house.”)

Hey, you “superheroes,”
You self-proclaimed big shots,
So proud of the debris of destruction
You leave behind yourselves>
Why all this posing and flexing,
You disgraces,
You God-rejected.
Did you take lessons in deception?
Your words slice and puncture,
Your switchblade words.
You love watching people fail
More than succeed.
You prefer slipping in sneaky lies
To telling the simple truth.
You love tearing people apart,
You Tricky Tongues.

Just watch out!
God’ll put you down big time.
He’ll pull you from your homes
And toss you in the gutter.
He’ll dump you in the trash.
Thoughtful, open-handed people
Will watch and ponder your ruin.
They’ll laugh at the tragic comedy.
“Look at this guy,” they’ll say.
“He relied on money,
Not God,
Making his living at the expense of others.”

But I’m a white-flowered dogwood,
Blossoming in God’s house.
Leaning on God’s relentless,
Never-quitting love,
Always. Always.
And so, I pray,
“You have done all things well.
And I am pleased to praise you
In company with all your faithful people.”
