Psalm 46

(For the worship leader: A Korah family song. Play it loud!)

God is our safe place,
Secret
Strong
Secure
Always available, always reliable,
No matter how bad it gets.
Fear has no hold on us —
Even if the ground collapses
Under our feet;
Even if the mountains around us
Crack and crash into the ocean;
Even if tsunamis and hurricanes
Cause chaos;
Even if earthquakes
Break mountains to bits.

There is a secret
Underground river in Jerusalem,
A spring-fed source of joy
And security
For the sanctuary
Where the Great One lives.
God is right there,
Fully present.
The city won’t fall to foes.
God will help her
Just as sure as the sunrise
Each morning.

Politicians are always causing chaos
With their bluster
And bravado.
And some countries do collapse.
But when God speaks,
The shouting is silenced
To a sudden stillness.

Yahweh the Undefeatable
Is on our side.
Jacob’s God
Is our impregnable fortress.

Stop and see
What Yahweh has done.
He has wiped the earth clean.
He’s muzzled
The dogs of war
Everywhere.
He’s defused the bombs,
Smashed the guns,
Torched the war machines.

Stop.
Be still.
Let this sink in:
“I am God.
I will take my place
Over all nations.
I will be known
And honored
From pole to pole.”

Yahweh the Undefeatable
Is on our side.
Jacob’s God
Is our impregnable fortress.
