Psalm 40

I waited and waited
Till I couldn’t wait a moment longer.

And Yahweh?
He turned around.
He listened.
He reached out his hand.
He grabbed me out of the sewer
I’d fallen into.
He hosed me off.
He gave me new clothes to wear
And a new lease on life.
He put a new song
In my mouth
And I’ve been singing it ever since,
Hoping many other will hear it
And join in,
Putting their trust in Yahweh.

The sweet life arises
From paying attention to Yahweh
Instead of our self-important hearts
And the world’s lie-gods.

The things you’ve done
And the things you plan to do
Stack to the sky, Yahweh.
I’d be talking nonstop
If I were to name them all.

Passionate worship and religious duty
Aren’t your thing.
But you’ve taken a drill
To my plugged-to-God ears
So I’ll finally listen to you.
No, singing and duty
Aren’t on your wish list.
When I finally got this,
I said,
“Here I am,
Just me,
Paying full attention to you.
The words in the Bible,
You’re speaking them
To me
Right now.
They’ve gotten inside me, my God.
They bounce around
In my heart.”

I haven’t been quiet about this.
People can’t shut me up.
You know this, Yahweh.
I don’t just think about how good you are,
I speak it.
I don’t keep your love secret;
I don’t hide your constant friendship
From your people.

So, don’t stop being kind to me, Yahweh.
Surround me with your love
And constant friendship.
My problems are spinning
Out of control.
I’m drowning in a sea
Of my own sins.
When I started writing down
My failures,
I got depressed.
I need help, Yahweh,
Now.
Please be quick!

Let those chasing me down
Trip on their own feet.
Let their smiles at my struggles
Be wiped away
As they fall face first
On the floor.
Let those who laughed at me
Become jokes themselves.
But let all those who search for you
Find you
And find happiness.
Let everyone who relies on you
End up saying,
“Yahweh is so, so good!”

But right now,
I’m a mess.
Spare a thought for me, Lord.
You’re my last, best hope.
Hurry!
My God,
Please.
