Psalm 143

(A David psalm.)

Listen up, Yahweh!
My prayer is banging at your door,
Ringing your phone non-stop.
You’re faithful,
True,
Good.
So, answer me!

Don’t take me to court.
I’d be found guilty.
All humans are guilty next to you.

My enemy is relentless.
He ran me down
And has his knee on my chest,
My back to the ground.
My life is so dark
I feel dead already.
My spirit gives way
Like an unsafe building.
My heart is buried
Under a ton of bricks.

I think back to the good old days.
They really were good,
Filled with all the good things you did.
You really are amazing
When I stop to think for a bit
About all you’ve done.

See these empty hands
I stretch out to you?
They match this empty heart
So barren,
So empty of you,
So thirsty for you.
I’m in the middle of a God-drought.

(Stop. Reorient.)

I need an answer, Yahweh,
And I need it quick.
I’m falling apart here.
Stop looking the other way.
If you don’t look this way,
I’m pretty much dead.
As birds sing the dawn chorus,
Let me hear the voice of your loyal love
In the morning.
I’m banking everything on you.
Point me in the right direction
And I’ll head that way.
I’m putting my soul in your hands.
Get me free from my hater’s grip, Yahweh.
You’re my hideout,
My safe place.
Teach me to know what you want for me
And to do it,
Because you’re my God.
May your Good Spirit be my guide,
Leading me on a trail
With no tripping stones.
Because of your good reputation, Yahweh,
Give me new life.
Because you always do what’s right,
Get my soul out of this trouble.
Because of your loyal love,
Kick out my haters,
Beat down my abusers.
Do this
Because I’m your servant.
