Psalm 135

Let me hear your Hallelujah!
A Hallelujah to Yahweh’s name.
A Hallelujah from you Yahweh servants,
Leading worship in Yahweh’s house,
In the temple court of our God.
A Hallelujah for how good Yahweh is to us.
A Hallelujah to his sweet, sweet name.

Yahweh adopted Jacob,
Made Israel his heir.
There is one thing I know above all else:
Yahweh is so great,
Substantial.
Yahweh is greater than every other attempt at “God,”
Has more substance than all of them together.
Yahweh can do whatever he wants to do.
Anything in the skies.
Anything on the earth.
Anything in the oceans,
All the way down to their darkest depths.
He fills the skies with thick gray clouds.
He pours down rain and forks of lightning.
He pumps his hurricane bellows.

He snuffed out Egypt’s firstborn,
Both human and beast.
Egypt, you saw
All those signs of his power,
All those stunning shows of his strength,
Humbling your pharaoh and his army.
He snuffed out a crowd of city-states,
Crushing their kings —
Sihon, the Amorite king,
Og, the Bashan king,
And all the rest of kings of Canaan —
Taking their land,
Giving it to Israel as a lasting legacy.

Your reputation, Yahweh, is rock solid.
People will be saying the name Yahweh
As long as there are people to say it.
That’s because you’re there for us
When we need it most,
Your heart turned toward those
Whose lives are turned toward you.

People like to create their own concept of “God,”
All gilded and silvery,
Polished fakes
They get to make and manipulate however they want.
Such a “God” can’t really speak to us,
Can’t really see us,
Can’t really hear our prayers,
Doesn’t really live.
Invent a nothing “God”
And end up just like it.
Trust in a nothing “God”
And get nothing out of it.

So, let me hear your Hallelujah,
All you Israelites.
A Hallelujah
From Aaron’s priestly family.
A Hallelujah
From Levi’s priestly family.
A Hallelujah
From everyone oriented toward Yahweh.
Let your Hallelujahs ring
From the Zion temple,
His Jerusalem home.
Yes, let me hear your Hallelujah!
